Unhappy With Your Gummy Smile? Here’s a Fix!
Look at the picture above. See that smile? That’s called a gummy smile. To put it in words, when you smile and your gums are visible through your smile, the condition is called a gummy smile. Rest assured that this is not necessarily a health condition but it sure takes a toll on the aesthetics of your beautiful smile.
But we can fix it! At Alsawai, we can make wipe off the pinkish hue from your smile. Let pearly whites shine brightly inside your red lips! But before we get to that, let’s know some basics.
Gummy Smile. Is It An Oral Health Issue?
Probably not. Hear me out.
In most cases, a gummy smile is a developmental condition. Maybe your upper jaw did not develop properly. Maybe your upper lip is too small. And maybe you live a very happy and contented life and smile broadly too often (we do hope that this is your case). Well, if you have ‘always had a gummy smile’ then there is nothing to worry about, at least, medically. Although some people with such ‘gummy smiles’ complain that they have difficulty in biting food or chewing.
But if you have recently started showing gums while you smile, then pay attention. Is it an infection? Is there bleeding or swelling? If that is the case, you need to see a dentist immediately.
But we are not here to talk about infections. This blog is about grooming the thing that beautifies us – a pleasant smile.
Gummy Smile. What Can You Do About It?
As a child, when you grow your permanent teeth, they are generally held together but excessive gum tissue. But this gum tissue naturally recedes as you grow older and your teeth grow longer. But sometimes, that does not happen. In those cases, a small section of the gum tissue can be surgically scrapped off giving you a perfect smile.
Like mentioned before, if the teeth do not grow long enough, it may look like you have too much gum even if you have just the right amount. Such stunted teeth can be handled with veneers or dental crowns (a cap-like extension for your teeth).
The most effective and most popular treatment choice of removing excess gum tissue is laser treatment. The laser beam reshapes your gum and now can ‘seal’ the surgical wound immediately. This way, there will be less bleeding, less pain and you can recover very quickly.
Orthognathic Surgery: A protruding jaw can show off more gum tissues when you smile or even when your lips are at a resting stage. If you have a structural/developmental defect in your upper jaw, it has to be recontoured surgically. This is major surgery and is done under the influence of general anaesthesia. Once your bit rests properly, your gums won’t show through your lips anymore.
Does your lip spread too high up when you smile and show off your gums? Then you have two options.
One is a lip repositioning surgery. Here, a surgeon will surgically restrict the lip from moving too high up. This is a permanent solution. Another way of calming your hyperactive upper lip is botox injections. However, this treatment is not permanent and you have to revisit your dental clinic every three months.
Many a time, a combination of treatment helps you gain the best results. If you want to take a treatment for your gummy smile, you can book an appointment at Alsawai and we can guide you how to best redefine your smile.
