Can Braces Fix Your Misaligned Teeth?
Are you hiding your smile or is a bit of food hiding behind your teeth? When that happens regularly, you probably have misaligned teeth.
Whether they are way too spaced out or all crammed together overcrowding your mouth when the setting of your teeth is not proper, you need to fix that.
Why? Here’s why.
Why You Must Fix Your Misaligned Teeth
The problems with misaligned teeth vary with the kind of malalignment. Depending on whether you have an underbite, or an overbite, or teeth crowding or gapped teeth, you will face various challenges regarding dental health and hygiene, cosmetic appeal and your speech sounds,
- Bad breath
- Tartar build up
- Tooth decay
- Wear of gum tissues
- Speech difficulties
- Problem with chewing
- Discomfort in bite
- Gum damage
- ‘Odd’ looking teeth
- Abnormal facial appearance
- Lack of confidence
However, most of these cases can be fixed just by wearing braces for a couple of months. Please note, if you have a serious case of overbite and underbite, especially where the jaw is involved, braces will not work. You may require a maxillofacial surgery. Anyway, for milder cases (which is what most of us have), you can always rely on braces.
Treating Misaligned Teeth With Braces
There are a few varieties of braces available to the dentists which can be used to set the proper alignment to your malaligned condition. These braces come with unique sets of pros and cons.
Let’s have a look.
Metal braces are the traditional braces which you might have seen the most often. As for the functionality of braces is concerned, to date, metal braces are the most effective.
A metal bracing has a metal bracket that is clipped to your teeth and a wire to hold the braces together. After you have worn the braces for a while, and the teeth have started resetting, these wires can be bent and adjusted to fit the new teeth setting. This process is continued until the desired teeth alignment is achieved. In the end, an orthodontist will remove the braces at his clinic.
Unlike before, metal braces now have a subtle look and can set the alignment faster and with less pain. Even then, based on your initial teeth setting you may have to wear the braces for any time duration between 6 months and 3 years.
A popular choice made as an alternative to metallic braces ceramic braces. Since ceramic braces do not offer many benefits in the comfort section, the chief motive behind this choice is its aesthetic appeal.
The ceramic braces are made of ceramic material which mimics the natural colour of the teeth and is less apparent to an outsider. Even the wires that hold the ceramic brackets together are made in the colour of the teeth. This blending colour would make braces look less ‘gross’. However, if you chose this type of braces you must take very good care of them because, just like teeth, ceramic braces stain very easily. So, to keep the look of the braces intact, you have to be very prompt to rinse and clean your mouth after you eat anything that has artificial colour (sometimes, even natural colour like wine or pomegranate can stain).
As compared to other ‘invisible’ braces, like Invisalign, ceramic braces work faster.
Lingual braces are a less visible version of traditional metal braces. How is it less visible? Well, lingual braces act on the inner side of your bite. Just like metal braces, the brackets and wires hold the teeth together and push them to their actual location; but the same happens in the back side of your teeth. They are as effective as metal or ceramic braces.
Although less visible than traditional braces, it will still be visible if you open your mouth. Plus, the main issue that occurs with lingual braces is that they were very hard to keep clean. The inside of your mouth including inner cheek and tongue are more likely to get injured with lingual braces. It can even impact your speech sounds temporary. In addition, lingual braces can only treat mild cases of malalignment.
Owing to these limitations of lingual braces, they have never gained as much popularity and only a small section of people opt for this type of bracing.
Self-ligating braces are a version of metal or ceramic braces. In this type of bracing, the wires are adjusted with a tiny clip set in each bracket. This makes the experience less painful as compared to the rubber holding used in traditional braces.
If this bracing treatment fits you, you will be able to reap the benefits faster as compared to its metal or ceramic alternatives. These braces are known to give you less trouble regarding dental hygiene as less food gets stuck in them. However, you must remember that these braces may not give results of all sorts of alignment.
Invisible braces, or Invisalign, have become the most popular choice lately. As the name suggests, these braces are invisible to an outside eye. Although they align much slower than other braces, they have many other benefits which compensate that limitation.
These plastic braces are removable. So, you can take good care of your dental hygiene. These braces are less painful. You will need to go to your dentist once in two weeks and get a new pair until your teeth are properly aligned. These braces are a little expensive.
Till date, invisible aligners only works for less serious malalignments. But research work going constantly to increase their scope.
